Settlement planning

Preparing your residence and absence history

Create a dated record that can support a settlement or nationality assessment.

Build a complete chronology

List each grant of permission, application date, decision and expiry date alongside every trip outside the UK. Keep departure and return dates separately and note the evidence supporting each entry. Passport stamps may be incomplete, especially where electronic gates were used. Travel bookings, employment records and your own contemporaneous calendar can help reconcile the history.

Apply the correct counting rules

Different settlement routes and citizenship applications use different residence and absence tests. Historic periods can also be subject to different rules. Do not rely on a single online calculator without first identifying which legal test applies. An absence that is permitted under a work route does not necessarily have the same treatment in a nationality application.

Explain gaps rather than guessing

Mark uncertain dates and seek records where possible. Record why longer absences occurred and retain supporting material, while recognising that an explanation does not automatically create an exception. Review each family member independently because travel and immigration histories differ. Start well before the intended application date so missing records do not force a rushed or inaccurate submission.

Turn information into a practical next step

Write down the point you need to resolve, the route you are considering and any date that affects your next action. Keep this summary separate from your full document file. A short initial enquiry can establish what support is appropriate before you share more detailed records.

For individual circumstances, confirm the scope and any fee before relying on professional advice. Prepare a consultation enquiry or browse the related routes below.
